"...how do we manage to pack so much playing into what looks like quite a short time on paper?!"
The courses are intended for adult players of grade 6/7 and above (based loosely on ABRSM levels). They are based on wind quintets, quartets and trios with some larger ensembles, and are suitable for both individual players seeking opportunities for playing with others of a similar standard, and also for pre-formed groups looking for coaching.
Courses start with all participants playing together in a large ensemble. The next day players are divided into chamber groups and given music and a rehearsal room. Tutors rotate around the groups spending 15-30 minutes with each group depending on numbers. The main aim of the course is to experience playing chamber music and to gain a better understanding of sight reading and effective chamber playing and rehearsal. On the longer summer course there is a pianist and the chance to perform solo work as well as specialist instrumental workshops.
We are delighted to offer a dedicated wind octet element to this course. This means that there will be places for the following instruments: 4 oboes 4 clarinets 4 bassoons 4 horns
This enables us to run two octets. Our intention is to have no doubling, so it will be a case of get your applications in fast.
Flute players, we are not abandoning you, far from it! At the same time as the Octets, we will be running an intensive flute course with Abigail Burrows who has tutored on our summer courses for the last two years and has been hugely popular as a result of her positive and supportive approach. This will mean that we have up to 6 places for flutes.
Friday Evening- Wind Quintets - all players ------------- Saturday Morning - Octets alongside Flute workshops Saturday after lunch - Wind Quintets (untutored) - music provided Saturday after tea/coffee - Octets alongside Flute workshops Saturday Evening - Wind Quintets -------------- Sunday Morning - Octets alongside Flute workshops Sunday after lunch - Final session, playing to each other
We hope this meets with approval, we’ve been trying to work out how we can play the extensive wind octet repertoire without leaving our flute players out in the cold. We hope our flute players will take advantage of this chance to have Abby’s expertise devoted to them for much of the weekend.
Our last course of the year sees us returning to the lovely High Leigh in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. With superb staff and excellent transport links we are very happy to have been able to secure another weekend here.
