The courses are intended for adult players of grade 6/7 and above (based loosely on ABRSM levels). They are based on wind quintets, quartets and trios with some larger ensembles, and are suitable for both individual players seeking opportunities for playing with others of a similar standard, and also for pre-formed groups looking for coaching.
Courses start with all participants playing together in a large ensemble. The next day players are divided into chamber groups and given music and a rehearsal room. Tutors rotate around the groups spending 15-30 minutes with each group depending on numbers. The main aim of the course is to experience playing chamber music and to gain a better understanding of sight reading and effective chamber playing and rehearsal. On the longer summer course there is a pianist and the chance to perform solo work as well as specialist instrumental workshops.
Summer course, 28th July - 1st August, 2019, Suffolk
For our summer course we are heading back to the picturesque surroundings of Suffolk, Janet's home county and a delightful summer venue that offers extensive grounds, a swimming pool and appropriate accommodation.
Many of you who have been on our summer winds and long weekend courses will know that from time to time we like to try something different. This year, with the collaboration of the wonderful Simon Marlowe, we are going to concentrate on works for wind and piano. Simon will come for two days and tutor rehearsals with various combinations of wind whilst playing the piano with them. This will be in addition to the usual solo concert and rehearsals which Simon accompanies. Janet will send out a list of available music including the Mozart and Beethoven quintets and any other works for smaller groups including Krommer concerto for two clarinets Beethoven trio for fl,bssn, and arrangement of a Brahms piano quartet and many others. We will also be working on the Poulenc sextet thanks to one of our members for providing the music for this.
This is all for the summer course in Suffolk, non-piano wind chamber music will be taking place alongside the piano works that Simon is leading.
